On the last day of my recent trip to Perth, I met Sarah McNeill at a Shenton Park cafe for coffee and a chat about The Hope Fault. Sarah’s story was published in Perth’s Post newspaper.
The Hope Fault is a uniquely crafted novel that interweaves the intimate and the remote, and beautifully captures the shifts, faults and nuances of a large family.
Sarah picks up on my sense of the novel as filmic, staged:
As Tracy talked about the threads of stories, she spoke in filmic terms – a cast of characters in scenes…that she visualised through a lens – panning out to wide shots to embrace multiple voices, … always searching for who was “in shot” and who should be just off-camera, waiting in the wings.
